Blackhorse House, Newcastle

M. J Phoenix & Son were appointed as Principal Contractor for the £1.6 Million refurbishments of Blackhorse house, the new home of Newcastle University IT department. Initially, the existing interiors were fully stripped out including previous mechanical and electrical installations and partitionings. The internal layout within the building was altered significantly which required structural alterations to the building and a new mechanical plant area was created within the 3rd-floor roof space.
Each level was subdivided into rooms to suit the needs of the client, new power and data infrastructure were installed throughout each floor whilst maintaining fire compartmentation. A full wrap-around scaffold was installed to facilitate masonry and window repairs as well as a new Renolit roof membrane. New external landscaping installations were constructed including DDA compliant ramps, paved areas, and a purpose-made cycle store. The internal fit-out comprised male, female, and gender-neutral toilet areas with shower facilities, kitchen and breakout areas and meeting rooms.
Teaching & Learning Refurbishment, Newcastle

MJ Phoenix & Son were appointed on behalf of Newcastle University to carry out the full refurbishment of 13 Teaching Rooms situated across 5 different university buildings located across the campus.
All rooms were fully stripped out which included the removal of all suspended ceilings, electrical and mechanical installations, flooring and all fixtures and fittings. Asbestos Containing Materials were also found during the strip out works which were safely removed by one of our licensed removal contractors in line with current regulation and Newcastle University policies.
The M&E fit-out works comprised of full electrical and mechanical installations including new power and data, new lighting, new AV installations and induction loop works, ventilation works and new radiators.
The finishes included the erection of new partition walls, suspended and MF ceilings, the supply and installation of new lecture theatre seating, new vinyl and carpet flooring, new secondary glazing with roller blinds, new bespoke joinery fixtures and fittings with full decoration works all carried out in line with the Newcastle University specification
Kirkley Hall Over 18’s, Student Accommodation, Northumberland

M J Phoenix & Son were appointed as the main contractor to undertake a comprehensive refurbishment of the over 18’s student accommodation at Kirkley Hall, Northumberland for Northumberland College on behalf of Hollis. Our works comprised a full strip out and remodeling exercise to facilitate the installation of new en-suite bathrooms. Each property had the existing mechanical and electrical infrastructure upgraded in line with the client's M&E specification this included access control, fire alarm, and boiler upgrades. Each property was fully refurbished with new kitchens, dining areas, floor finish, and decoration as well as a replacement of all windows with new UPVC and composite doors.
